Explanation: Mahatma Jyotirao Govindrao Phule was a social reformer during the 19th century India. He was born in 1827 in Satara district of Maharashtra to Govindrao, who was vegetable seller .His family belonged to the 'mali' caste, which were treated as a lower caste by the Brahmins .
He wanted to provide the women and lower caste an equal opportunity for education. In 1848 he opened a girl`s school but no teacher attended the school because of the presence of lower caste students. The school had to be closed down because of lack of funds.
Later on with the help of his Brahmin friends Govande and Valvekar he reopened the school. In 1851 he came up with a girls' school with a limited number of students which later kept on increasing. By 1851-52 he succeeded in opening two more schools. In his address to the Education Commission also referred as the Hunter Commission in 1882, he presented his activities in the area of education.
He criticised the British Government for spending a major chunk of the revenue on the education of the elite class, resulting into a monopolistic control by the Brahmins in the offices under the Government. He attacked the Brahmins for preventing others to have accessibility of knowledge.
