most historians agree on the fact that Ardhamagadhi Prakrit was the conversational language of Mahavira (and also of Gautam Budhha).
The reason that he spoke in Ardhamagadhi out of many sub divisions of the class Prakrit was that he was born and raised in the ancient Magadh region and its then prevalent vernacular was Ardhamagadhi.
Also as a matter of fact one would have to learn the grammar of Ardhamagadhi Prakrit before being able to avail other Prakrits in literature and probably also conversation due to their superclass - subclass relationship.
