Mahima has to distribute pencil boxes to children in three classrooms. In the first class, she distributes half of the
pencil boxes. In the second, she distributes half of the remaining pencil boxes and in the third she again distributes
half of the remaining pencil boxes. She is left with 5 pencil boxes. How many pencil boxes did she start with? ​

the no of boxes is 40

let the pencil boxes from the start is=a

1st class,she gave a/2

so,she is left with a/2

2nd class,she have half of a/2 i.e =a/4

then she is left with = a/4

3rd class,she gave half of a/4 i.e =a/8

now she has only a/8

given that she is left with 5 boxes after all distribution.

hence a/8=5

a=40

therefore,she has 40 boxes when she started with.
