The method of enhancing the appearance and consistency of the fabrics is called fabric finishing. It also increases laundering and wear resistance to fabrics. Depending on the texture and purpose of the fabrics the operations involved in fabric finishing. In certain cases, particular operations may be eliminated

Explanation:

  1. Glazing:Glue, shellac, or starch is applied to the fabric surface to give a polished or glazed appearance. The surface is later ironed under pressure. This fabric finishing process allows resistance to dirt penetration and is is usually applied to cotton fabrics for making it stiff and shiny.
  2. Calendering: The simplest and most common finish used to enhance the appearance of any gray or finished cloth. Similarly a fabric is passed through a variety of smooth hot rollers to remove wrinkles and make them smooth via a calendering or industrial ironing operation. It makes the material smooth and lustrous, enhancing its look.
  3. Sanforisation: In the sanforization process, the fabric is put into a sanforizing machinery where it is treated with steam or water  to encourage shrinkage, then rubbed against a heated rubber band to relax and recontract the fibers. It is then treated steam/water to decrease the shrinkage that would occur after the first washing. This means that the material shrinks just 5% after first washed compared to a possible 10% for non-sanforized  fabrics.
  4. Mecerization: This is a smoothing procedure that can add luster by reducing the fuzziness on the surface and making it more dye-receptive for dyeing. The finished fabric is thicker, brightly colored and now more absorbent. Mercerisation is a routine finish done on all cotton to make it lustrous, durable and dye absorbent
