Mahmud of Ghazni was extremely ambitious and wanted to achieve the title of 'Ruler of the World'. Temples in India were a rich source of treasury for the prosperity of his kingdom. He thus launched aggressive expansionist campaigns, and invaded India 17 times between 1000 and 1025 AD. One of his famous invasions is that on Somnath Temple. Those invasions were also a symbol of power and prestige other than wealth.
