main constituent of an acid is H+ ions. An acid should donate H+ ions or protons. Hence acids are proton donors whereas bases are electron donors(OH-).

i think main constituents of acid is Hydrogen (H+) ion as all acids involves hydrogen ion as essential product . For ex. HCl , H2SO4 , HNO3 etc. all contains hydrogen ion as a compulsory product.
