The term ‘metaphysical’ means ‘beyond the physical’ or ‘abstract ideas’. In his essay Discourse Concerning Satire John Dryden remarked that John Donne in his poems ‘affects the metaphysics’ and ‘perplexes the mind of the fair sex’ instead of engaging their hearts. The term ‘metaphysical poets’ was also used in a derogatory sense by Samuel Johnson to describe a group of 17th century poets whom he viewed as ‘the men of learning’ and felt that ‘to show their learning was their whole endeavour’.
