Vertebrates are differentiated by having a vertebral column. As chordates, all vertebrates have a similar anatomy and morphology with the same qualifying characteristics: anotochord, a dorsal hollow nerve cord, pharyngeal slits, and a post-anal tail.

They have three main distinguishing features: The spinous process bifurcates into two parts, and so is known as a bifid spinous process. There are two transverse foramina, one in each transverse process.
