The main organs of the UN are the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice, and the UN Secretariat. All were established in 1945 when the UN was founded.

The united Nations is a peace keeping organisation . Its works is carried out with the mutual cooperation of six main organs:-

1.General Assembly .

• It is the main and the largest body of the UN . It is the main deliberative , policymaking and representative organ of the UN. It is made up of all members nations. Currently it has 193 members . It is based in New York .

2.The security Council .

• It is responsible for the maintenance of peace and security in the world. It has fifteen members out of which five(China,Frace,United kingdom,United States of America and Russia) are permanent and the other ten are nonpermanent members.

3. The Economic and Social Council .

• It promotes the welfare of people and works for human rights and fundamental freedom. A number of groups work under this council,called Commisions.

4. The Trusteeship Council .

• It supervised the welfare of dependent people under the UN and helped them to attain self-government . All countries have now become independent and have now joined UN . The last one was Palau , which became independent in 1994. The trusteeship Council is no more functional now.

5. The international Court of Justic:

• It settles legal disputes between nations and gives advisory opinions to authorized UN organs and specialized agencies . It is located at the hague in Holland. It had fifteen judges belonging to different member nations .

6. The Secretariat:

• It is the adminstrative organ of the UN . It is located at the headquarters of the UN in New York . The secretary General is the cheif officer or head of the Secretariat . The secretary General of the United Nations at present is António Guterres of Portugal.
