Pons

• A structure termed the cerebellum (Latin for "small brain") sits behind the pons and the remainder of the brainstem.
• This area seems layered and wrinkled in cross-section.
• It has two hemispheres, just like the cortex, with a thick layer of grey matter encircling a white matter core area.

Medulla oblongata

• The medulla oblongata is a region of the brainstem and hindbrain that connects the brain to the spinal cord.
• The medulla is a small nerve tract that houses the control centres for our autonomic vital processes, such as heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing, as well as numerous involuntary reactions like swallowing and sneezing.
