The first Parliament of Great Britain was established in 1707 after the merger of the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland under the Acts of Union. Parliament was elected by a small percentage of the population.
The 1832 Reform Act extended the franchise so that more men could vote. It removed some of the differences of the electoral system that existed from region to region.
The 1867 Reform Act further increased the electorate to approximately 1/3 males.
Ballot Act 1872, sealed ballot boxes were used to ensure a fair election.
Corrupt and Illegal Practices Act 1883, bribing voters was prohibited.
Representration of the People Act 1884 gave the majority of working class men the vote. Electorate increased to 2/3 males.
