Goitre is an enlarged thyroid gland. It is a contidion associated with abnormal thyroid functions. In humans, thyroid gland is situated in the front of the neck just below the area of Adam's apple.

Thyroid gland plays an important role of maintaining the metabolic processes of the body by producing thyroxine.

A goitre may develop due to hyperthyroidism (excessive secretion of hormone thyroxine), hypothyroidism (under secretion of hormone thyroxine).
