The main features of the national forest Policy of Post Independence India are as :

1.  Extension of Forest areas though more afforestation and social forestry. The target of 33% of land area should be covered by forests was fixed by GOI.

2.  Extension and better management of National Parks, Wild Life Sanctuaries,  Biosphere Reserves etc.

3.  Checking and prevention of soil erosion and land degradation.

4. More and more programms for the conservation and protection of forests.

5.  Restoration and preservation of ecological balance.
