Dam is constructed across Mahanadi River about 15 kilometres from Sambalpur in Odisha.  

Behind the dam extends a lake where Hirakud Reservoir is 55 km long.

Hirakud Dam is composite structure of earth, concrete and masonry.  

10 km north of Sambalpur and it's longest major earthen dam in India which measures about 25.8 km including dykes and stands across river Mahanadi.  

Original dam has an overall length of 4.8 km situated between two hills where Laxmidungri on left and Chandili Dunguri on right.  

Dam is flanked by 21 km of earthen dykes on both left and right sides closing low saddles beyond adjoining hills.  

Dam and dykes together measures 25.8 km.

It has largest artificial lake in India with reservoir holding 743 km2 and shoreline of 639 km.  

Two observation towers on dam at each side.  

One is "Gandhi Minar" and other is"Jawahar Minar" where both observation towers has extensive views of lake.
