Mainly topology is of five types.

• The geometric representation showing the various ways in which computers are connected to one another is referred to as topology.
• The five types of topology are given below:

1. Bus topology- all devices are connected to one main cable with the help of drop lines.
2. Ring topology- one device gets connected to two other devices by its side, thereby forming a ring structure.
3. Mesh topology- Each device connected to all other devices with the help of a point to point link.
4. Star topology - Every device gets connected to a central device( known as hub).
5. Hybrid topology - Two or more topology gets combined to form a hybrid topology.

Arrangements of the devices on a network is known as Topology.

Types of topology are :-

1. Mesh Topology: Network of computers in which each device is connected to every other device on the network is called Mesh Topology. Devices are dedicatedly connected through point to point link. It is reliable. If any fault occurs in such a connection then it can be detected easily.
2. Star Topology: In such a type of network, there is a central device called hub and all the other devices are connected to this hub only. Any communication taking place between two devices passes through hub. It is easy to install this network. If hub fails, everything goes down so hub needs a good maintenance in such a network.
3. Bus Topology: In such a network there is a main cable to which all the devices are connected through drop lines. Less cables are required in bus topology.
4. Ring Topology: In such a network, device is connected to the devices placed on its either sides, thus forming a ring. It can be managed easily but can also face data traffic issues.
5. Hybrid Topology: When two types of topologies gets combined, then it is known as hybrid topology. Eg. :- Combination of Star and Ring Topology is a Hybrid Topology. It is difficult to install and in such a network, it becomes difficult to detect failures (if any).
