Answer:

Maize is actually a fruit in which the fruit wall and seed coat are fused together to form a protective layer, therefore, we call such fruits as grain or caryopsis.

In maize, the seeds are called as kernels as it is enclosed in a husk. The kernel or maize grain has a pericarph of the fruit fused with the seed coat due to which it is botanically a fruit and not a seed

Hope this will help you!!

the maize grains are called as a fruit not a seed because it comes from a separate ripened ovary within the grass inflorescence. In case of maize, the grains has a pericarp of fruit fused with the seed coat.
