Major earthquakes are less likely to occur in Orissa because it is situated in seismic zones III and II which are less vulnerable.

In India the earthquake prone areas are the central and western Himalayas, Jammu and Kashmir, Indo- Gangetic plain, Rajasthan, Rann of Kutch and the north eastern states of the country.
