There are many problems. It cannot be said as a whole ,seven states have their own problems.
But as a Northeasterner, I'll generalize the problem in a simple language.
1) Terrorism: Many tribes exists in Northeast. They have many demands, often they're not fulfilled . So they take up guns.
Due to this guerilla warfare, the whole of NE is suffering . Extortion, Strikes, Ambush..etc are ruining the whole life of people.
Every tribe is having their own terror group , who are practically doing no good to their clan but are a havoc to them.
ULFA: United Liberation Front of Assam.
NDFB: National Democratic Front of Bodoland.
NSCN, GNLT,MNF, KLFT…..many such notorious groups.
2)LACK OF QUALITY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES: Now this forces many students to pursue their education outside NE
3)LACK OF INDUSTRIES: There is no major industry in NE which would attract further investments.
Apart from petroleum ,& tea lack of industrial establishment is also implying lack of jobs forcing many youths to leave NE.
4) CORRUPTION: Whoa!!!
Whole of India is suffering, but believe me NE me kuch jyaada hi hai!
5) DIFFICULT TOPOGRAPHY:
Hills and mountains do not allow railways expansion and thats why lagging behind in Infrastructure.
6) NEGLIGENCE FROM CENTRE:
Now this is a serious issue. Not going into details i would just say NE is the most neglected area in terms of fund allocation and infrastructure development.
Recent developments have been sweet but the resources of NE are not utilised to full capacity.
7) RACISM: Last but not the least. Oriental looks invites unpleasant mockery to NE people living in mainland India.
