Majoritarianism is a concept which signifies a belief that the majority community should be able to rule the country, whatever they want to do or wants, by disregarding all the wishes and rights of the minority communities.

When Srilanka became independent in 1948, the leaders of Sinhala community established dominance over government by virtue of its majority. The leader of the Sinhala community dominated the government and adopted a series of measures which were not desirable for the minors. These measures were,

  • Under the act of 1956, An act was passed which made Sinhala, the national language of Srilanka.
  • Sinhala people or applicants have more chances or opportunities of getting seats in universities and government jobs.
  • A new Constitution was made which protect and foster the Buddhists, and also increased the feeling of alienation among the Srilanka and Indian Tamils.

The alienation feeling among the Srilanka and Indian Tamils gradually increased. They felt very discriminated. They felt that the constitution and government denied them equal opportunities and rights in getting jobs and university seats. It seems like they ignored their interests.

Thus, the Srilankan Tamils formed different political parties to protest against the majoritarianism in government of Srilanka. They demanded equal rights and opportunities as the Sinhalas. They demanded a separate Tamil state(Eelam) in north and south of the country.

This also lead to several conflicts between the communities and it soon turned to Civil War. The Civil War had a terrible impact on the social, cultural and economical lives of people living there.
