Aim: To demonstrate the process of soil erosion
Materials required: 3 plastic bottles , soil , 1 cup of mulch with some leaf litter , Handful of grass , watering can , 3 clear disposable cups , 3 pieces of cotton thread
Procedure:
- Cut the plastic bottles vertically i.e. from top to bottom into halves.
- Place the bottles and fill each with the same amount of soil.
- In bottle 1 add mulch and leaf litter and pack it down.
- In bottle 2, add the grass and pack it down.
- Bottle 3 will only contain soil.
- Lay the bottles horizontally hanging over the edge of a table.
- Make 2 holes on each side and using thread attach one cup each to the mouth of the three bottles.
- Using the watering can simulate a rainstorm by watering each of the soil science bottles.
- Observe which cup held the maximum amount of soil.
Observation: Bottle 3 has the maximum amount of soil followed by bottle 2 and then bottle 1.
Result: Grass prevented soil erosion while soil eroded quickly in bottle 3.
