Sergei threatens to report him to police but later offers a job when the beggar begs not to. He takes him with him to cut wood but the man's strength is undermined by vodka. Later, the beggar keeps on coming to him to work whenever in need of money. When Sergei was shifting his home, he writes a letter to his friend to take the man in for a job. After some gap of time, they meet together. The man is transformed and works at an attorney. He thanks Sergei but says the real person who helped him was Olga, the cook who used to cut the wooden logs on his behalf. She used to shout at him, call him a drunkard, then she cried at his fate. Sergei might have taken him in, but Olga was the one who truly transformed him.
