Diwali is a festival of light, and it is the holy festival for hindu religion. Here the philosophy behind the festival is that, when Lord Rama was returning with Sita, after defeating Ravana, at that time, people were lighting their houses with candles and making crackers burn.

From that thinking it became, religious festival to celebrate the victory of Lord Rama every year, it also convey the message of defeat of the Evil.
