(1) Tuberculosis: (a) Symptoms- Coughing that occurs for three weeks or more than that, coughing blood, loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, chest pain while breathing and coughing, fever, sweating at night, (b) Precautions- Cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue while coughing. Dispose of your used tissue in a bin. You should not cover your mouth and nose with your hands while coughing, even if you do, you must wash your hands properly.
(2) Typhoid: (a) Symptoms- Prolonged high fever, headache, severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, pinkish rash, reduced appetite, pale skin, internal bleeding, vomiting blood, (b) Precautions- Drink boiled water in order to kill the germs in the water. Avoid drinking water from the streets or shops. Also, avoid soft drinks and juices. Don’t forget to carry a water bottle whenever you go outside. Avoid eating food from street-side food stalls or even junk foods from cafes and restaurants. Try to clean the water tank and water purifier at home regularly to prevent germ growth. After using a public toilet, wash your hands properly, if possible, with soap or handwash.
(3) Cholera: (a) Symptoms- Diarrhoea, dehydration, nausea, low blood pressure, wrinkled skin, rapid heart rate, dry mouth, (b) Precautions- Drink purified water. Wash fruits and vegetables before consuming them and try to eat them when they’re fresh. Wash your hands with soap or hand wash frequently. Keep your toilet and bathing place fairly clean to prevent germs growth.
(4) Whooping Cough or Pertussis: (a) Symptoms- Runny nose, sneezing, low fever, a cough that ends with a whooping sound, breathing shortness, (b) Precautions- The effect of vaccination for Pertussis is short-lived. You can get a prescribed inhaler and carry it with you. Try wearing a mask when you go outside to prevent breathing in the germs and pollutants in the air. Breathe water vapor to clean the throat because the heat helps in killing the bacteria.
(5) Diphtheria: (a) Symptoms- Sore throat and hoarseness, a thick and grey membrane covering the throat, swollen glands i.e. enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, breathing shortness or rapid breathing, fever and chills, nasal discharge, malaise, (b) Precautions- Getting a diphtheria-preventing vaccine would be the best way to not get the disease.
