The British came to India as traders. In order to expand their trade they started taking up wars and expanding their territorial control in India. The stages of the British conquest of India :
1600: The East India Company formed by a Royal Charter.
1613-14: British East India Company set up trading post at Surat.
1751: Robert Clive, age 26, seized Arcot in modern Tamil Nadu as French and British fought for control of South India.
1757 : Battle of Plassey, was a decisive victory of the British over the Nawab of Bengal and his French allies.
1764: Battle of Buxar. British defeated Mir Qasim, Shuja ud daula and the weak Mughal Emperor and became the rulers of Bengal, richest province of India.
1792: Britain's Cornwallis defeated Tipu Sahib, Sultan of Mysore and most powerful ruler in South India, main opponent of the British.
1799: Sultan Tipu was killed in battle by the British.
1803: Second Anglo-Maratha war resulted in British control of large parts of India including Delhi.
1809: British made a bargain with Ranjit Singh for exclusive areas of influence.
1849: Sikh army was defeated by the British at Amritsar.
1876: British Queen Victoria (1819-1901), head of Church of England, was proclaimed Empress of India (1876-1901).
1947: India gained independence from Britain on August 15.
