In some ways, the struggle for independence was very similar for both Indians and Vietnamese.

The vietnamese fought against french occupation while the Indians fought against the British. Both were formidable European powers, with great armies and even greater wealth.

However, both armies were defeated due to a grass-roots opposition among the masses that stood up!

India attained independence from the British on 15th August, 1947, having been ruled for nearly 200 years by them, through non-violent means, under the inspirational leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. However, the country was divided and Pakistan carved out as a separate nation. While the country has since marched forward as a democracy, some of the princely states initially showed a bit of resistance in joining the Indian union, but Sardar Vallavbhai Patel, the iron man and India’s first Home Minister, ensured complete unification.

After World War II, from 1946-54, the Vietnamese fought the First Indochina War with their colonial power, who had ruled for nearly 100 years, and defeated them. Tragically, however, the country broke into two parts, the Communist North and the Capitalist South. There were strong differences between the two parts. This triggered the Second Indochina War, which went on from 1954 to 1975. USA backed the south, while Russia and China backed the north. Eventually, in 1976, the country was unified under a communist regime. Ho Chi Minh, the leader of the communist movement, who died in 1969, is revered to this day.
