Before 1789 French society was divided into three estates-The Clergy or the first state-The clergy in the France were quite wealthy and owned big estates or land holdings .They enjoyed several privileges and lived luxuriously .Religion was a guise for them to hide their sense of Licentious living.The church chores and other functions were done by the lower clergy,who were given insignificant wages for their jobs.The clergy paid no taxes to the government.The Nobles or the second estate-They were the big aristocrats and landlords ,who controlled all high ranking administrative posts and owned large land holdings.They also had monopoly over wine shops,floor mills etc.They also had many privileges for hunting ,shooting and fishing.They were considered above law .The poor peasant had no right to complain if their standing crops were destroyed by the cattle and pets of the lord.The nobles also paid no taxes to the government.Third Estate-The unprivileged classes were known as the Third estate.The third estate was comprised of the peasants,artisans,city workers and the middle class people like teachers,doctors,lawyers,writers,civil servants etc.All such people had no political rights .
