Democracy  is a form of government in which the people have the authority to choose their governing legislation

Explanation:

  • In ancient Greek, the word "democracy" emerged first in a classical ancient era in the town-state of Athens. Athenian democracy was a direct democracy with two distinctive characteristics: the arbitrary choosing by common people to to fill the few existing administrative & judicial offices of the states, and the parliamentary assembly of all citizens of Athens
  • While the Roman Republic played a major part in many facets of government, only a minority of Romans had voted in democratic elections. In the gerrymandering system the voting of the wealthy was given more weight, because most politicians, including Senate members, were among a few rich & noble families.
  • While most parts of Europe were controlled by clergy or feudal lords during the Middle Ages, numerous parliamentary or assembly structures persisted (though sometimes affecting only a small percentage of the populace). Renewed curiosity in Magna Carta was seen in England in the 17th century. In 1628 the House of England accepted the petition of the right, setting down certain protections for subjects. In 1689, the "Bill of Rights" codified and continued in effect those protections and freedoms. The Bill laid down the need for frequent elections, regulations on freedom of expression in Parliament and regulated the monarch's power to make sure royal absolutism did not reign at the moment, unlike most of Europe.
  • After the unification of the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland under the Union Acts, the first Great Britain Parliament was set up in 1707. Democracy has become a living style with greater social , economic and political balance on the American frontier. While not identified by the founding fathers as democracy, they expressed their commitment to embed the American experiment of natural rights and equality.
  • In consecutive "waves" of democracy that have come from different war, revolution, decolonization or social and economic situations, transitions to modern Democracy had taken place since the 20th century. In the 1920s and 30s, 1960s and 1970s, as well as 2010s, there have been global "democratic regression" reversing democratisation waves.
