The Survey of India is India's central engineering agency in charge of mapping and surveying.[3] Set up in 1767[4] to help consolidate the territories of the British East India Company, it is one of the oldest Engineering Departments of the Government of India. Its members are from Survey of India Service cadre of Civil Services of India and Army Officers from the Corps of Engineers. It is headed by the Surveyor General of India.At present, Survey of India is headed by Lt Gen Girish Kumar, VSM.

The British government when ruled India conducted different types of surveys.

Explanation:

  • Surveys were done on SI (cartography). Also in different fields like botany, archaeology, forests and fisheries.
  • These surveys helped to identifies the real statistics in those fields. Similar surveys were also done in geology, ecology, oceanography. Also, the total population analysis and survey was also done.
