List of major weeds in the area

  • A weed is a plant considered undesirable or unwanted in a particular area, especially in an agricultural land.
  • It is extremely important to control the growth and spread of weeds in agriculture as they compete with the crops for natural sunlight, water and nutrients and space for growth.

The most common weeds seen in our area based on a study are as follows. Their common name and genus name (in brackets) are given.

  1. Green Foxtail  (Setaria viridis )
  2. Ragweed (Ambrosia) - Pic 4
  3. Cocklebur (Xanthium )
  4. Pigweed (Amaranthus )
  5. Rubber bush  (Calotropis)
  6. Spider weed (Cleome)
  7. Jimsonweed/Devil's snare, (Datura)
  8. Indian heliotrope (Heliotropium )
  9. Big sage/wild sage/red sage/white sage/tickberry (Lantana)
  10. Touch-me-not (Mimosa pudica )
  11. Congress grass/feverfew (Parthenium) - Pic 1
  12. Gale of the wind (Phyllanthus )
  13. Purslane/Pusley (Portulaca )
  14. Mexican bluebell or Britton's wild petunia (Ruellia )

The crops commonly grown in our area and the weeds that typically grow along with them are listed below.

1) RICE

  • Wild rice (Zizania)
  • Nut grass  (Cyperus rotundus)
  • Barnyard grass  (Echinochloa) - Pic 3
  • Crowfoot grass (Dactyloctenium) - Pic 5
  • Nutsedges  (Cyperus sps)
  • False daisy (Eclipta alba) - Pic 2

2) RAGI

  • Pigweed (Amaranthus )
  • Congress grass/feverfew (Parthenium)
  • Crowfoot grass (Dactyloctenium)
  • Spider weed (Cleome)

3) CORIANDER

  • Goose foot (Chenopodium),  
  • Corn spurry (Spergula arvensis)  
  • Purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus)
