Make a list of the various discoveries related to cell, cell organelles and cell theory.
▶The term cell was coined by Robert Hooke in 1665.
▶Anton Van Leeuwenhoek described free cells for the first time in 1674.
▶Robert Brown in 1831 discovered nucleus.
▶Schleiden and Schwann give the cell theory in 1838 and 1839.
▶In 1855 Rudolf Virchow presented the idea that all living cells arise from pre - existing cells.
▶Haeckel in 1866 reported that nucleus stores and transmits heriditary information.
▶Discovery of electron microscope in 1940 made it possible for us to study complex structures of the cell and its organelles.

➬Cell:— Cell is the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms. That is why, cells are also known as the "building blocks of the body". Just like as the brickes are used to make a building, cells are assembled to make the body of a living thing.
➬Robert Hooke (1665) use of simple microscope to observe the slices of cork, obtained from the bark of a tree. He observed the some honeycomb- like structures, with compartments or boxes, separated from each other by a wall or partition. Hooke named these compartments "cell". But the cells that he observed were actually the dead cells in the cork. The cells of the living organisms were observed only after the discovery of improved microscopes with very high magnification.
In 1838, Scheilden and Schwann, two German biologists, presented the cell theory of the life. Cell theory given by them was further expanded by Virchow. The major points of the cell theory are:
- All living things are made up of cells. Cells are the basic structural and functional units of life.
- New cells arise from the pre-existing cells by their division.
- The organisation of the cells in the body of a living organism decides its structure and functions.
