Plan for group discussions; decide, set and adhere to dates, times, location and purpose. However it also means being prepared for those informal group discussions that pop up; being clear about how, when and if these informal meetings ever need to be followed up or tabled in a formal way.
Share information relating to the discussion with participants in advance.
Try to make the environment welcoming and conducive to adult learning it will help individuals feel safe, comfortable and valued as learners.
Ensure self-care and respectful behaviour are priorities
Make discussions meaningful and relevant to the group’s current context and existing knowledge.
Keep it active … engage the discussion around sharing experiences, finding solutions, creating action plans, or exploring case studies.
Offer a clear outline when the discussion commences and ensure there is adequate opportunity to summarise discussion and set actions at the end.
Use prompts, questions and seek feedback, to encourage and support others to contribute and participate. Remember the role of leading a group discussion does not mean you need to have all of the answers or do all the talking
Give all participants a chance to speak when they wish to contribute ideas and feelings or discuss alternate views to what others propose.
Check in with the group throughout the discussion. Listen to responses to questions you ask, but remember to look out for nonverbal cues too―they give good indications about whether anyone needs further clarification, discussion or a break.
After the discussion follow up with participants about how they feel about the experience and outcomes. It is sometimes necessary to check in a day or so after the event
