The students began by analysing the movement, modes of transport used and other student behaviour on road. Student population data was collected, providing information about the number of students commuting by private taxi, school buses, and as pedestrians. It was practically impossible to facilitate smooth and safe movement of all students from just one single school gate.

The students decided that it was most crucial to act at a local level. It was necessary to stagger the timing of departure from school, and examine alternative routes to avoid congestion at the school’s main gate as well as on the approach road to the school. A gate connecting the school to the main road through a public park was installed with the cooperation of the region’s resident welfare association. The departure schedule was adjusted to avoid congestion.

Student volunteers were put on duty to supervise a queue from the main gate for pedestrians and from the alternative gate for those who used private taxis and the school buses. Taxi drivers were instructed to collect students from the gate to escort them to their respective cars.

To ensure disciplined movement on the road and prevent jaywalking, Dr Rakesh Kuma of the ACP Traffic Police was invited to school to tell students how important it is to develop road safety habits. The presence of a police officer was requested at the time students leave school. A driving scenario session educated students about how to read traffic signals and cross the road only at a zebra crossing.
A number of activities such as learning about traffic signals, poster making, collage making and slogan writing on road safety practices were organised to create awareness among the students.

A request has been forwarded to the traffic police department to put up a sign board near the approach road to school ‘School Ahead’, install a traffic signal for pedestrians and to put up fencing on the road divider to prevent jaywalking.
