A 2D pie chart is one of the more basic options in Excel.

Whether you are preparing a proposal for a new client or presenting your annual sales forecast, pie charts provide an instant visualization of complex numbers. Microsoft Excel includes a range of options for creating and customizing pie charts, including 2D and 3D versions, with a variety of themes and labels to suit your needs.

Creating a Pie Chart

1

Launch Excel and open a new worksheet. Create a basic spreadsheet with text labels in the first row and/or first column of the worksheet. For example, to create a spreadsheet showing the number of apples and oranges you had on Monday and Tuesday, type "Apples" in cell B1 and "Oranges" in cell C1. Type "Monday" in cell A2, "Tuesday" in cell A3 and enter the number of each fruit for each day in cells B2,C2, B3 and C3.

2

Highlight the data you want to present in the pie chart, including the labels, by dragging the mouse across the cells. Each chart can compare data only from the columns or the rows, but not from both. In the example above, you could create one of four pie charts: apples and oranges on Monday; apples and oranges on Tuesday; Monday apples compared to Tuesday's apples; or Monday oranges compared to Tuesday's oranges. You also could create more than one pie chart to present the data.

3

Click the "Insert" menu and click the small arrow under Pie in the Charts group to see a drop-down menu with icons of available pie chart styles. These are organized in two groups: 2D and 3D. You can select from a solid pie chart or one with spaces between segments. In the 2D group, you also could select a pie-in-pie chart or a bar-in-pie chart.

4

Click one of the icons to select a chart type and insert the chart in the worksheet. Move the chart on the worksheet by dragging it with the mouse.
