At the time of Independence, the makers of the Constitution had rightly envisioned that the deprived section of society needed to be improved through education and employment opportunities.
Reservation to the backward classes, scheduled tribes, and scheduled castes was essential in order to bring them at par with the others. It was an attempt to create equality and equity in educational, economic and social areas. However, this affirmative action was to be in force for only 10 to 20 years. It was an attempt to strive for an egalitarian society.
Even after 65 years of independence, the minorities and the oppressed are still deprived because only the creamy is being benefited with reservations.
Reservations are actually not reaching the people for whom they are really intended rather it has today become a slogan for the political parts to win voters from the backward classes/tribes. The game plan of the politicians is clearly evident in this ‘Quota Raj’.
Reservation today is not just an affirmative action but has become a means for getting more and more benefits. As a matter of fact, the scope of reservation has enlarged to quite an extent. Does it mean that backwardness has increased?
Today, it is sad to say that different religious communities are also demanding reservation as they want the privilege of reservation to be extended to them. As a matter of fact, it has triggered competition among communities for proving their backwardness. Reservation provides some benefits in the employment and education to the backward, creating vested interests. Today, many communities want to be considered backward rather than forward.
Is it not injustice to give special privileges on the basis of birth? Does this not take away the right of a brilliant student for securing a seat in higher education and getting a job in the Government sector? In an equitable society rights of all citizens are protected.
In India caste is the predominant factor used for reservation in Government jobs and in higher education. As a matter of fact in States like Tamilnadu, there is reservation of 69% seats.

Before we move towards understanding the basis of reservation system- caste system. Caste System had been basis of social order in Hindu Society since many centuries. Some even say that Hindu Shastras had mandated such order. I haven't read them and thus I don't believe such people. Anyway, caste system is not unique to Hindu Society. In Muslims there are sub divisons, similarly we have ideological differences in Christianity. But caste is something different.
Over the years I have developed this theory of mine about how this caste system could have possibly evolved. I believe that there were not many job choices or formal skill development etc in that age. Education was limited to spiritual level. Thus a barber could only teach his child about being a barber. Likewise a soldier's son became a soldier, a king's son became the successor. Overtime some surnames got associated with a job. Now obviously rich people did better jobs that's why they were rich. So Rich guys claimed they were upper caste people ( since they were rich and powerful). They exploited the poor. Poor got subdivided into lower castes and rich got united with upper castes. Social acceptance and opportunities were thus restricted to those belonging to upper castes. This social distortion must have taken many generations to fully evolve into the mamoth caste system we see today. It all came down to“Jaati kabhi nahi Jaati”
In short, Caste System was exploitation system of the powerful. It is a symbol of backwardness. It was meant to serve only one purpose - to satisfy the vanity of the powerful.
Why Reservation System?
Sorry I am not aware of the social reasons of reservation in any other society as mentioned in the question so I cannot comment on them. But in British India, Indian politicians or leaders represented their caste or community for a long time. Very few were national leaders. The other leaders fought for their caste not for their country. If not for Gandhiji these people would have never united. On August 15, 1947, these people, who for their entire lives had unfavourable opinions about the other castes, took control of a poor and underdeveloped country. I am not only considering national leadership here but all MLAs, Mayors, bureaucrats etc. who held important positions. Not all were biased but most were. To prevent any imbalance in such positions there were caste based reservations in Parliament and State Assembly. I consider this a good move as otherwise everyone would not be represented correctly.
Even after 3 decades of independence, could we give jobs to everyone? could we give education to everyone? Heck, we couldn't even feed everyone. Social discrimination was rampant even after abolishing untouchability. Even today we have largest number of poor people in the world. Poverty dont have any caste. Those saying that poverty in India is falling everyday should measure poverty not by Govt benchmarks but by international standards.
Successive government failed to raise the standard of living of everyone. “Sabka saath Sabka Vikas” Won in 2014 despite “Garibi hatao” of 70s. So what do Governments do to get power, they gave reservations.
First came STs/SCs reservations in jobs. Then reservations in promotions. Then enter the OBCs. Then reservation in higher education.
Then came the fight for becoming part of ST/SC/OBC. I can't decide who is at fault here. The people who instituted reservation or those who want to be a part of it. Wanting to be declared a backward so that they can move forward. What irony!
Benefits of Reservations:
People do rise from worst circumstances in life to reach respectable position due to reservations
Not all people who take reservations lack merit/talent. They didn't have resources to work hard. When they were studying in candlelight nobody came with a bulb. Reservation compensate them for unequal playground
Scores political points for leaders. Also these communities feel that their leaders are doing something
It is when everyone will help everyone without knowing their castes, that would be my Ideal India. Jab “jaati kisi Ko Na bhaati”
i hope.its hlp you
