Roman numbers arose from Rome and Arabic numerals emerged in India.

Roman Numbers:

  • Roman numerals emerged in 753BC-476AD.
  • These are the hybrid of letters and characters.
  • There are 7 standard symbols in this numeral system.
  • They are I( 1 ), V(5), X(10), L(50), C(100), D(500), and M(1000).
  • We use these common symbols and write further numbers.
  • These were typically used in the West well in the 14th and 15th centuries.
  • The numbers 1 to 10 are depicted in Roman Numerals as I(1), II(2), III(3), IV(4), V(5), VI(6), VII(7), VIII(8), IX(9) and X(10).
  • These numbers were also used today but are not so common.
  • Some of the instances are :
  • 1) They are adopted as a page number at the beginning of the books.
  • 2) To write the year of building on the constructions.
  • 3) To show the hours in a clock.

Indo-Arabic numbers:

  • These are also inferred as Hindu Arabic numerals.
  • These comprise the set of digits {1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0}.
  • This number system is most commonly used everywhere in today's world.
  • These developed between the 1st to 4th centuries.
  • The symbols to depict the digits arose from the Brahmi script.
  • These were introduced in Europe by the Arabs of North Africa in the 11th century.
  • Leonardo Fibonacci was the early one to use these numbers in his publications.
  • This number system is recognized as the decimal number system.
  • Every digit in the given number has its place value.
  • Deliberately, this number system replaced the Roman numerals.
  • This is because of the complication in computations using Roman numerals.
  • Both have their significance in their manner.
