A fire burned brightly in the fireplace. They were sitting around the fire and trying to keep themselves warm.  Then he poured over them all the kerosene oil that was left in his oil-can, and lighting a match set fire to the pile.The fire leaped into life; the flames encircled me so that in a moment my clothes were blazing.They all asked for reinforcements and all said that the Russians were holding their positions and maintaining a hellish fire under which the French army was melting away.
