                                                Coping With Stress

Madhav was an exceptional student. He always topped among all the sections. He always won the appreciation of his parents, friends, and relatives. He didn't realize how time flew and he came to class eleventh after passing class tenth with flying colors. As was his parents' dream, he chose Science stream and remained focused in his studies.

One of his classmates, Pratibha was also very intelligent and hardworking girl. Her father was transferred from Banglore and she took admission in Madhav's school. Both of them were good friends as they shared notes, studied together and went for the same coaching. Somehow, when they came to class twelfth, Madhav's parents became over-expectant and wanted him to top in the board. Madhav didn't say anything outrightly and took it as his responsibility to fulfill his parents' dream.

On the day of their first exam when he came out of the examination hall and discussed with Pratibha his answers, he realized that one of his one mark answers was wrong. He got a setback and when he reached home, without talking to his mother and without even having his lunch he went straight into his room and bolted the door. When he came out of the room his mother asked him worriedly and he confided in her. She just kept quiet. It further depressed him and before he had his second exam, he went into depression and lost all his confidence and zeal to go for the second exam. As a result, he missed his exam and lost one valuable year.

Panic Does Not Solve a Problem

Madhav is a Class 9 student and a class topper. He always faces stiff competition from his classmate Prathiba. Moreover, he was always under a lot of stress due to the immense pressure by all his relatives to top the class. As a result, Madhav always spends sleepless nights preparing for his exams.

It was the day of the Mathematics exam. Madhav did his very best and was sure that he would get above 90 percent. When he came out, he realized that he had made a silly mistake that would cause him to lose just one mark. He got upset and feared that Prathiba would be the topper for that exam. Added to this, he was also apprehensive about being humiliated because of this. This affected him so much that he went into depression. As a result, he could not write the next day’s exam and he lost one academic year.

Moral: Encourage a child to do well but do not compare him or her to another child.
