The tiger (Panthera tigris) is one of the most magnificent and awe-
inspiring wild animal alive today. The tiger has nine subspecies, but
three of these are already extinct and the population of tigers all
across Asia has now decreased significantly. The Bengal tiger
(Panthera tigris tigris) can be found in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and
Bhutan and the Indochinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti) is found in
the forests and mountains of Thailand, Combodia, Vietnam, Laos and
Burma. The Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris Jacksoni) is found in WestMalaysia, while the siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) lives in
Eastern Siberia in Russia. The South China tiger (Panthera tigris
amoyensis) is found in Southern China whereas the Sumatran tiger
(Panthera tigris sumatrae) is found on the island of Sumatra in
Indonesia. The Bali tiger (Panthera tigris balica), the Caspian tiger
(Panthera tigris virgata), and the Javan tiger (Panthera tigris sondaica)
are the extinct subspecies. The Bali and Javan tiger were found on the
islands of Bali and Java in Indonesia, while the Caspian tiger was
found in Central Asia.
