Koko

  • Koko is a female gorila that was born at the San Francisco zoo on July 4th, 1971. And Dr. Penny Patterson is the trainer of it. Petterson begins teaching sign language to Koko in 1972. Two years later she is moved onto the Stanford University with her trainer. Koko continues to learn on the campus until 1976. After that she begins living full-time with Patterson's group, the Gorila Foundation. Therefore they have made a strong bondage between them.
  • According to Dr. Petterson Koko has mastered sign language and the female gorilla knows 1,ooo words. For example Koko signs the words 'finger and bracelet' for 'ring'. Koko chooses a gray cat and named it 'All Ball' for her birthday gift in 1984. But sadly, 'All Ball' gets out of the Koko's cage and was hit by a car. When this is informed to Koko she replies the signs "Bad, sad, bad" and Frown, cry, frown, sad." It seems that they have a good relationship between them. Above evidences expose that Dr. Petterson is responsible for her and it is also clear that Koko can express her emotions, choices and so on.
