What is a Kaleidoscope? and How does it work?

An instrument which works on the principle of reflection to make beautiful patterns with the help of reflecting surfaces and light is known as a kaleidoscope.

Generally, three mirrors are used for making a Kaleidoscope. The material used for making the symmetrical and beautiful shapes are on the one end of the kaleidoscope and through the other end, by rotating it we can see beautiful patterns.

Light and mirrors are the two things which let this happen. Whenever light strikes the reflecting surface, it gets reflected at an angle where angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection and hence we are able to see beautiful symmetrical figures.

Materials Required for making a Kaleidoscope :-

1. Three thin and slight long mirrors.
2. A butter paper or a translucent paper.
3. Three cardboard pieces of sizes same as the mirror pieces you are gonna use.
4. Glue or tape.
5. Colors to decorate the Kaleidoscope from outside.
6. Materials to put inside the kaleidoscope for getting beautiful shapes like beads etc.

Process to make a Kaleidoscope :-

1. Paste the three mirror pieces (from back side) on the cardboard which you have cut of the size of the mirrors itself.
2. Place the three mirrors together in a way that they form a Triangular Prism. Remember that the reflecting part should be inside.
3. Glue them together or use tape for binding them together.
4. Place the translucent paper on one end of the Kaleidoscope.
5. You can cover the other end completely with a paper or a cardboard and make a hole to see inside or you can also leave it as it is.
6. You can decorate your Kaleidoscope from outside to look beautiful.
7. Enter the materials inside your Kaleidoscope.
8. You are done. Just rotate the kaleidoscope now and peep inside it to see the beautiful patterns formed.
