English is used by over 150 million people across the globe. One person out of every four person in the world can be reached through English. Fifty percent of the world’s newspapers, scientific and technical journals and over sixty percent of world’s radio stations use English as a means of communication. It is the lingua France, of the people from south, north, east and west of India. So Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru described English as ‘Our major window on the modern world. English is important not because a number of people know in India, English and not because it is the language of Milton and Shakespeare. English is important because it is the major window on the modern world. We think of our five year plans, industrialization, scientific development and technology. But every door of modern knowledge will be closed if we do not have one or more foreign language.
