There were three estates in the french society

First Estate - comprised of clergy

Second Estate- comprised of nobility

Third estate - It consisted of peasants artisans and middle class workers such as lawyers doctors etc. Peasents made up about 90 percent of the population. But a small no. of them owned the land they cultivated. About 60 percent of the land was owned by the rich member of the third estates. The first and the second estates enjoy certain privileges from birth. The clergy was exempted from paying taxes. While the nobility extracted feudal does from peasents. The peasents were also involved in building new roads etc.
