Answer:

The effects of British Education in India are:

  1. The British began education in India because of its need of clerks who can work for British government.
  2. The Indian population was not permitted to appear for other exams of civil services.
  3. The British education introduced teaching of English as a compulsory language.
  4. Britishers had opted downward filtration theory in their policy of education.
  5. This indifference created a lot of anger against the British government and played a vital role in the Indian freedom movement.
  6. Introduction of women education had also created anger against the Britishers by some groups.
  7. Also, they wanted to understand the local customs and laws well.
  8. For this purpose, Warren Hastings established the Calcutta Madrassa in 1781 for the teaching of Muslim law.
  9. In 1791, a Sanskrit College was started in Varanasi by Jonathan Duncan for the study of Hindu philosophy and laws.
  10. The missionaries supported the spread of Western education in India primarily for their proselytising activities. They established many schools with education only being a means to an end which was Christianising and ‘civilising’ the natives.
