we add oil in water bodies because it decrease surface tension of water so mosquito can't breed in water now as density of oil is less than water so you must have seen floating oil on water . this makes difficult for mosquito to lay eggs in stagnant water and thus they lost a breeding place which can significantly decrease malaria causing carrier mosquito
