Winters live up to their reputation, however summers are a completely different story. Temperatures can range rapidly across the region from -71.2°C in Oymyakon (the coldest village on Earth!) to +50.0°C in semi arid areas south of Lake Baikal near the city of Ulan-Ude. It is because most of Siberia experiences extreme continental climates because it is mainly located at quite northerly to far northerly latitudes and it covers a large continental landmass with parts being over 1,600 kilometres or 1,000 miles from any ocean. With its location in the Far Northeastern part of Eurasia is why it is colder in winter than places located on the west side of Eurasia at comparable latitudes i.e. Great Britain. Irkutsk and Ulan Ude are 20 degrees colder in winter than London despite the three cities being located on the 51st and 52nd parallels respectively. London has a Cfb (Temperate Maritime climate) whilst Irkutsk has a Dwb/Dwc
