Explanation:

Stone was the most important writing material in ancient India . Carving letters on stone pillars  is a very ancient tradition. Emperor Ashoka ( 272-232 BC)   wrote decrees both  on stone and on stone pillars . The columns are made of sandstone pillars . The columns are made of sandstone quarried  in Chunar (UP), monolithic and very shallow . Some columns were 15 meters high and weighed almost 50 tons . Ashoka pillars can be found in Delhi, Allahabad , Lumbini and many others.  Various type of material  on which they were written . The writing  of this period can be characterized as early and infantile , when the expression of the rock art separates and begin to take the form of writing .
