Manure contains minerals (such as nitrogen and iron) which plants need. We provide garden
and crop plants with these minerals. Where do plants which grow naturally get these from?
(Hint: Why did you fill the pots with sand and not soil?)​

Plants get these minerals from the sand and not soil because Silica, also known as silicon dioxide, is a natural occurring material that is also the major constituent of sand, which is estimated to comprise more than 10% by mass of the earth's crust while soil is not good for plants to grow !
