The compass needle was redirected as the wire was drawn nearer to, at that point more remote far from, the compass.
The electric flow coursing through the wire makes an attractive field around the wire.
The extremity, or north-south relationship, is controlled by the course of the current in the circuit.
When you moved the compass close to a bar magnet, the needle indicated the magnet's attractive field and not toward the north.
