In regard to the previous poster's answer, fats ARE lipids. They are also called triglycerides, and they are the major lipid component of the seeds that birds eat. Since fats have the highest energy value of the three macronutrients (i.e. more than double the energy content per unit weight possessed by carbohydrate and protein), they are an ideal way to store energy in an animal that is heavily dependent on flight--a situation where the ratio of power to weight is at a premium. By using fat, birds can maintain high energy stores, yet keep their body weight to a minimum.
