A short story on diwali at our home:

Deepavali, the festival of lights was a royally celebrated festival in their family. And it was the first Diwali after their father's death. The closer the festival day came, the more I missed my father. Glad dad took them shopping for new clothes, sweets and crackers, they missed it all. While the rest of the kids burst crackers on the way and showed off their new dress and ran around happily, Anusha and Akhilesh locked them inside the house, devoting all their attention to the television.

Suddenly Akhilesh broke the silence and said, "Akka (Sis).. crackers?" tears in eyes. Anusha quickly mumbled "Shh.. Mom can come anytime now. Don't talk about crackers". They knew how hard it was for their mother to make ends meet day and night. His face fell in fear. He slowly took his brother to the terrace and said, "Come on...let's count the rockets (crackers) in the sky." Both immersed themselves in the game of rocket counting and it eased their heavy hearts. She promised herself that soon she would make her little one happy by offering her a bunch of crackers on one upcoming Diwali.

And his thoughts were soon distracted by his mother's voice, Akhilesh ran downstairs and there stood their mother holding the MTR Gulab Jamoon mix. Their eyes started shining with joy (It was their favorite sweet and a ritual they do every year). And they hugged their mother tightly. And this love for their mother quenched their thirst for everything else in the world.

Now, after 11 years of this Diwali, Anusha has enough money to buy crackers for her little brother, but they both don't enjoy it anymore. They refrained from this ritual of bursting crackers for some other reason then and for some other reason now. Two adult siblings have become environmentally friendly.

So even now they celebrate their Diwali by counting rockets in the sky. But indeed they enlightened their mind and environment with the thought of go green and Happy Diwali.
